Mariusz Hermanowicz (1950–2008) was a Polish-French photographer. He was renowned for his unique method of combining photographic images with personal, handwritten commentary. His style was full of irony and humour, but also of tragedy. He produced highly personal and emotional works linked to the turbulent history of Central and Eastern Europe, drawing on his travels in search of his family’s roots. At the same time, he worked for the French Ministry of Culture, documenting cultural heritage in various regions of France. In the later stage of his career, he devoted himself to classical studio photography, which, however, contrasted with his bold psychological themes.

Since 2015, the Archeology of Photography Foundation has been caring for Mariusz Hermanowicz’s photographic archive. It digitises and catalogues the archive, using it as the basis for exhibitions and publications. A portion of the collection can be viewed on the Foundation’s Virtual Museum of Photography.
